Baby products???!!!?
So my husband and I are expecting our first baby at the end of may and we are trying to get things that the baby will need. My question to all of you is what products are a MUST HAVE the first few months? Ie: Lotions, shampoos, anything and everything is welcome. What products did you find most useful, or did you find that was waste of money? We just want to make sure we are prepared for the baby. Thank you all.
THANK YOU EVERYONY!!!! Your suggestions are AMAZING! Thank you all so so so so so so so much:D

Car Seat, Eucerin Lotion, Onesies, diapers, wipes, Desitin, blankets, clothes, baby wash, and a swing.

I never used that stupid vibrating chair, the wipe warmer was a waste of money and honestly, my son has been co-sleeping with me so I really didn’t need to buy the crib right away. Oh, and I never bought a changing table – I just change my son on my bed.

Forget products. My baby used the same natural and organic soaps, shampoos and lotions as the rest of the household and never had excema, dryness or a rash of any kind.
Instead, get yourself a sling or carrier of some kind so that you can wear the baby. You will have your hands free for dishes, laundry, and maybe even combing your hair.

Waste of money: diaper genie (after a month we just threw diapers in the trash since it was being taken out every day), bumbo chair (my son hated it and is almost too big at 9 months)
Must haves- Footed PJs (in case your baby is a kicker and won’t sleep with blankets), oversized swaddling blankets (what they don’t tell you in the hospital is that their blankets are much bigger than the regular ones in the stores that ppl usually register for, but once we figured that out we found some at target and on amazon.com), boppy pillow (for arms who are not used to the workout, i.e. holding a baby all day if necessary. It really helps out!), cheap cloth diapers to use as burp clothes(they are much bigger than the cutsie ones with designs and work much better)

diapers
wipes
socks
onsies
a few outfits
diaper rash cream (love dr. smith’s.. can get it at any pharmacy and also at walmart… small container but a lot goes a long way… son is 14 months old and still half way full!)
crib
bassinett
sheets
receiving blankets (can also be used for burp cloths)
carseat
diaper bag
bottles (preferably platex drop ins- much safer and sanitary)
paci if that is what you are going to use
waterproof crib pad for the matress- accidents happen
stroller
sleep supporter- helps baby sleep and not roll over
monitor
swing
mylicon
baby tylenol
bottled water (safest for baby when formula feeding)

that is all i can think of right now LOL!!!!

http://www.parentingweekly.com
this site helpz with everything!! it gives u lists that you need for the first few months of pregnancy…and what u need in the bag to take to the hospital on ur delivery day…and alot more stuff!!!
but you’ll need….
lotion, baby powder, diapers, bottles, shampoo, baby wash, baby brush…..

Nappy Rash Cream (I think its called Diaper rash in the USA) is a must, because no matter how much you try….they still get it!!
I’m not sure if you have Johnson and Johnson brand in America, but the baby bedtime bath lotion they sell REALLY does work, so get that!!
Curash brand (not sure you have that either) have a lot of great products, the shampoo helps with cradle cap and the baby wipes and nappy rash creams are excellent too.
I always buy Huggies brand nappies, they are really good!!
Amolin (once again not sure if you have that…) is the best laundry detergent, it is sensitive and leaves a beautiful baby smell too.
Hope that helps….good luck!!

For the first few months, all you really need is a place for the baby to sleep, onsie bodysuits, receiving blankets, a few caps, a baby towell, baby shampoo, lotion, diapers, ointment, and burp rags. If you’re nursing, you don’t need bottles and the hospital should give you a pacifier, an aspirator (to clean the baby’s nose if it’s stuffy) Everything beyond that is really just an extra.
For instance, swings are great to have, but if you’re strapped for cash, try going on to your local freecycle.org site. People are giving away baby stuff all the time. Just clean it well before using it. Good Luck!

ok lets see …

diapers and diapers! BUT i would not buy to manynewborn packages of diapers because they grow out of them sooner then you think!

also i love johnsons bedtime bath lotion and bath soap! it smells so good and then so does the baby and makes them relaxed if the baby is like fussy or something, i believe it actually works!

also wipes! you can never have to many wipes…

um i found out that i have a lot of recieving blankets and i hardley EVER use them!! so i thought those were kind of a waste i mean like 3 or 4 ok, but i think i have about 15-20!! lol

also you can never have enough diaper rash cream, i mean my baby is 5 and half months and i am still using the same one when she was born so one tube last awhile.. i use A and D and also desitiin in the diaper bag!

well for me i could never have enough burp clothes cuz my baby spits up like crazy lol

also i think a thing you need is a baby bathtub
a swing is also great when they are little, they go straight to bed in it.. a play pen with like a changing table on it is also good for like the living room area!

bottles! i would amke sure you have agood amount of bottles unless you enjoy washing them a lot! lol
(you can never have to many bottles)

you can also never have enough onsies.. they get used up fast usually…and some sleepers and then some play outfits and then some cute outfits of course,(you can never have enough cute outfits!!) :)

some dreft or the baby detergent you prefer!

um thats all i can really think of right now, i hope this was somewhat helpful!!
congratulations on your new baby!!

I know that I will get some thumbs down for this but I am just being honest….I bought myself a bobby pillow for nursing and it was the biggest waste of money…I never use it…it is uncomfortable as HE** for nursing and I could never get her positioned right…..another thing I thought was a waste was the swaddling blanket…my baby never did fit in it right……I would say the best thing I have though is my baby carrier you know the wearable one…it is great you can do a few things around the house and have baby right with you……My baby is now 4 months old and still fits in perfect…..she loves to be carried around in it…..I use Johnson and Johnson products and they all work good…I love their night time lotion……CONGRATS on you new baby and just remember that you will never have everything you will need right away even prepared as you will be you will always see something that you just have to have……

You need diapers, baby wipes(alcohol free), LOTS of blankets and LOTS of snap up jumpsuits (milk/formula gets on everything), a bath tub, car seat, baby shampoo, and lastly a swaddler (they love being wrapped up tight, especially if they’re womb sick the first month).

Leave out toys and the expensive stuff till they’re about three months. Before then, all they really want to do is eat and be held.

A baby swing or rocker is an absolute must! The movement seems to really help them fall asleep.

Lots of onesies, especially since it will be warm when your baby is born. They grow so fast at the beginning I wouldn’t worry about having more than a few fancier outfits.

Lots of spit up rags.

I wouldn’t bother spending the extra money on one of those baby monitors where you can talk back to the base in the baby’s room, no one I know ever uses that.

Instead of buying a car seat and stroller I like the combos where the carseat can be attached to a stroller base. It makes it all so much easier.

And of course the basics, diapers (though not too many of one size, like I said they grow astoundingly fast), lots of wipes, a baby toiletry kit, bottles, pacifiers (one is never enough, they always get lost), and blankets and such.

That’s all I can think of at this moment. But CONGRATULATIONS! I’m excited for you.

oh oh and for when they are a few months and able to sit up well by themselves, one of the Johnny Jumpers! The seats that hang from the ceiling of a doorway, every kid I’ve ever watched loves them!
And the saucer seats (the seat in the middle of a cirle with toys on it) is great for putting a kid down to play, and making sure they are immobile!

I think the other posters have given you some good ideas. The only two I would add are a boppy pillow (for feeding, laying baby in, doing tummy time etc.) and a front carrier or sling if you plan to wear your baby. I could not live without my front carrier. It is an instant cure for crying, allows me to hold him while I do things around the house and is an easy and convient way to bring him with me shopping or anywhere out in public without having to lug around an impersonal stroller or carrier.

Diapers, wipes, cloth diapers to put over your shoulder while burping the baby so you won’t be spit up all over, desitin for diaper rash (although if you change your baby when he/she is wet, you won’t need it) several pacifiers of the same kind (Unless you don’t plan to use one) because they get used to one kind and if you lose it, you will have back-ups. A swing is nice, a car seat is the law, then the obvious baby shampoo and lotion. Make sure if you use powder that you don’t use any with talc (has caused cancer) but use the kind with cornstarch. One thing I always did with my kids was use caps or little bonnets. It kept them from having ear infections during cold weather. Congratulations on the new baby! Yes< someone mentioned a rocker! Babies usually love being rocked to sleep, and even when they are a little older you can rock them and read to them or rock them when they are sick.

You have to make sure you have Mylicon Gas Drops. They work wonders for a new born. Make sure you have something to put the baby in IE. swing, bouncy seat anything like that. Something to put them is while you are making dinner that sort of thing. A great thing to have is a snugglie or front carrier. Sometimes they don’t want to be put down and you need both hands! Lots and lots of bottles. The more the better. You will lose them all the time! Same with pacifiers.
You can never have to many blankets either. A Bopee breast feeding pillow is a great thing to have even if you are not nursing. An excersauser is another great thing. You won’t need it for a few months, but they are awesome!! Another thing you need is a really nice stroller. Spend the money cause you will use it for a few years and it makes a world of difference.
Good Luck!!

Good to have:
My Brest Friend nursing pillow.
Moby Wrap or other soft carrier
Seventh Generation diapers.
California Baby soap

Waste of $ $ :
Wipes warmer
Gowns
Mittens
Diaper Genie (get the Diaper Champ)
Heavy coil crib mattress (get a firm foam one instead)

People got us all kinds of diaper creams. We didn’t really use them until last month when my daughter had her first ear infection and the amoxicillin gave her the runs and a very bad diaper rash. I tried them all with no luck. Went to the store and after reading all the packages chose Aveeno diaper cream and I could see her diaper rash disappearing with every change.

I would not have registered for a bumbo seat if I had known she would barely use it. She was too tiny to use it properly when she first had strength and by the time she was big enough to sit in it safely, she hated being immobilized.

Get a rectal thermometer – our pediatrician will only accept readings rectally until they’re two years old. Plus it can be used to stimulate their bottom if they’re constipated

Get or make a sling! I use a Maya Wrap available at http://www.mayawrap.com or you can make your own using the directions found here http://www.mayawrap.com/n_sewsling.php When my daughter was born 5 weeks early it was the only thing that would sooth her to sleep, instantly, every single time. She is now 7 months old and still uses it.

And for yourself – have plenty of feminine care products on hand. No one told me that the payoff for not having a period for nine months was that I would bleed like the heaviest one ever for a month straight and not be able to use a tampon. I had to keep sending my husband to the store and that’s terribly embarrassing for him.

edit- I forgot until I read the post above mine that My Brest Friend is super! It’s better than the Boppy because it gives back support which felt fantastic after giving birth.

I purchased an inexpensive Summer infant bather. I think it was 12 bucks at Toys R Us. It’s a hammock style mesh thing that goes in the kitchen sink. It was awesome! I used it for nearly 7 months :) The lay down blue plastic baby tubs are not that great. I like the hammock one much more.

Nursing bras at Target are great. I buy the one w/ the lace at the top of the cup. Also around 12.00.
You won’t need a high chair until 7 or so months. And, you won’t need an umbrella stroller until about that time also.

Bouncy seats are great. I bought the Fisher Price Rainforest one. Again, we used it for about 7 months. I fed Noah in it from 6 mths to 7 mths. When he was a newborn, I would put him in it while I took a shower.

Generic Target diapers will save you a LOT of money and they work for Noah. I tried all of the other brands but found that these are terrific.

A baby bath (for when the belly button heals) sleepers with zippers ( i find them much faster and easier to use because the snaps are a pain) a bassinet a ton of diapers and wipes and my baby LOVED her swing after she was a month old we couldn’t get her to sleep in anything but the swing. We bought a monitor with a TV in it (walmart on sale) so that she could sleep in her own room but I could still feel better being able to see her.
Good Luck and don’t worry to much i didn’t feel prepared and i had everything i could think of!

MUST HAVE

Car seat
Diapers
Onsies
Bottles
Nipples
Bottle Cleaner
Formula or breast milk
Baby hand towels
Ivory Soap
Receiving Blankets
Baby mittens- to keep the baby from scratching her/his face.
Hat-for baby head
Socks
Pajamas- Babies only need pajamas for the first couple months of their lives. The grow to fast.

You don’t need baby products for cleaning your baby use ivory soap to wipe your baby down. Some babies will have a allergic reaction to the baby products because they contain so much unnatural ingredients. Instead of using diaper wipes, you a rag it prevents your baby from getting a diaper rash. Also after every changing use Vaseline that will prevent diaper rashes. When my daughter got older we started using diaper wipes when she went number 2. If you do use wipes rinse them out first. Mother of a 6 month and 10 year, 15teen.

easy ill tell you everything you need so print this out
1. babywipes
2.diapers newborn to size 1 i recommentd pampers they are the best. huggies and luvs babies pee right out of them.
3.blankets at least 10 because it will get dirty fast
4. washcloths as much as possible they come in handy for baths, feeding and washing
5. of course a carseat
6. a bassinet so you can put the baby next to you when you sleep, i like it better because you can set it up anywhere. you can always move a crib around too heavy.
7.bottles and extra nipples
8. bottle cleaning brush
9. baby soap
10. fomrula similac is the best and buy liquid because powder is too hard to mix sometimes and made my babies consipated.
11. hats to keep little babys head warm awwww
12. mittens because babies nails grow fast they will scratch themselves
13. onesies, and pajamas
14. a camera so you can capture every moment because babies grow up so fast
15. baby comb and brush
16. a baby kit with thermometer, nail clippers, comb and nose cleaner.
17. have plenty of space to store babies thing neatly and keep orgainize. i bought things to hang diapers up. and i got a bunch of clear dressers from walmart k mart because cheap. and very handy for baby clothes.
18 baby music.
19. lots of love which you cant buy and im sure you already have.
20. baby snuggli carrrier thingy. use this when baby is 3 months and up. i wrappd a blanket around it too to make sure baby had support for babies head. be careful. very handy when wanting to take baby with you. and baby always takes a nap in there.
21. baby lotion but i didnt use it much only sometimes.

throw a baby shower, i got so much stuff my room was packed i mean packed like everything was on the floor with stuff.

ill also tell you things you dont need because its a waste of space and money
1. baby tub no point you can wash baby carefully in your sink. hold baby tight and use washcloth. baby bathtub isnt good for newbabies.
2. socks dont buy sock because this will cut off babys circulation especially if the socks are too tight no point.
3. baby food babies dont eat until they are 1 years old so dont buy it too soon or it will expire.
4. baby swing isnt necessary because that scary especially when babies so light it will swing the baby too fast.
baby bouncher you dont need that yet because it vibrates.
5. stroller dont need it yet. waste of space. usually if you go to the store you can put your carseat on the basket it snapps on and push baby with you.

thats about it. hope this helps and congrats on the new baby.

First I want to say congratulations on your soon to be little one, children really make your lives complete! =)

As parents of 4 little ones we have had our share of successful baby products and wasteful ones. There are too many products out there that makes things difficult when trying to find the right ones for you and your little one.

Here is list of what we have found to be useful, and what we found to be wasteful. Good luck to you both! =)

Useful:

A bouncer, (ours folds up, which makes it great for takinjg it to the grandparents houses)

A highchair, (we have one that folds up, has three relclining positions and height positions, as well as wheels. We’ve been using for 6 years now and it’s the best thing to put a newborn in when they don’t want to be away from you.)

A changing table, (if you have room for one it’s a great way store all the diapers, wipes, etc. in one place)

Dr. Brown’s bottles, (we have done both Nursing & bottle feeding and have found Dr. Brown’s bottles helped reduce the babies spit up and gas pockets. Buy a bottle brush and 6 bottles – three 4oz and three 8oz.)

If nursing I’d suggest getting youself stocked up on some breast pads, I found Playtex to be my favorite. Also get some Lanolin cream for your nipples, it will help will soreness and cracking.

Bathtub & bathbag, (both are great to have and help make bath time easier.)

Rubbing Alcohol & Qtips, (you’ll need these for the first few weeks and will use them every time you change the babies diaper. Just dip the Qtip into the bottle and then carefully use it to clean the umbilicol cord.)

Burp clothes, (get some white ones, they are great for spit ups and such, and then get some “cutsie” ones for when your out – just for fun!)

Butt Paste diaper cream, (it’s literally called that and it really works!)

Recieving blankets, (only a few will do)

One or two soft blankets, (great for tummy time & cuddling)

Pacifiers, (we always start off with just two, one latex one & silicone one. One of our munchkins hated the latex ones but took to the silicone.)

Baby lotion, baby wash, wash clothes, nail cilppers, thermometer, & baby brush/comb

A walker, (our little ones loved sitting in them when they were 4 months old. Get one that folds down, it makes taking it with you much easier)

A Porta crib, (we have one that gets set up in our room for the first few months and then we move them into their crib)

A crib, (you don’t have to go expensive on the crib or crib matress)

A crib mattress

Crib sheets, (get at least 5, just in case you ave a spitter upper – LOL)

Mattress pad cover, (get two)

Onezies, (get some cute ones for when you go out but then get some for around the house, to sleep in, etc. that you don’t care if they gets spit up on.)

Bibs, (great for keeping their clothes clean)

A stroller, (get one that has an infant carrier, & base and try them out at the store first to make sure it’s easy to use – the infant carrier will need to go with you when you bring the baby home from the hospital.)

Teehting rings & teething tablets, (my kids all started teething around 3 months and we found these to work best – the teething tablets can be found in the pharmacy at Target)

socks

Snuggly, (great for carrying the baby around with you, handsfree – especially if they are extra clingy)

Diaper bags, (get a small one for when running to the store, etc. and a big one for longer outings – make sure it’s one YOU like)

Sleepers, (pick up a few sleepers for chilly nights)

Diapers & wipes, (we get our from Costco – you get more for your buck)

Formula, (we used Kirkland Signature, from Costco)

Formula case, (you can get the at Babies R Us, Target, etc. – great for taking enough for three bottles.)

Nursing cover, (I found that using a nursing cover works better than a blanket – the baby can’t pull it off of you)

Wasteful:

Baby swing, (none of our kids liked it so we gave it away)

Boppy, (only thing we found it good for was tummy time)

Diaper trashcans of any kind, (save your money and just use grocery bags)

Advent bottles, (some people have better luck with them then we have)

Swaddler, (my kids hate being swaddled and a blanket works out just fine)

My Brest Friend Pillow, (although it is better than a boppy I found very little use for it when nursing. Instead I used pillows and now, 4 months later, I don’t even need the pillows.)

Bottle warmer, (we just ended up keeping distilled water in the bottles, which was room tempature, and just pouring the formula in when needed)

Wipe warmer, (not very practical, in our expierence)

Baby gowns/covers, (all our munchkins hated being confined and it made buckling them up in the infant carrier difficult)

Well, that’s about all I can think of. I wish you the very best of luck with your delivery and your little one! =)
