Some baby products contain cancer-causing chemicals

baby products

This article is not intended to alarm parents, however it is our aim to inform parents of the dangers lurking within many well known shampoos, baby wipes, lotions and other baby related products. Many products claim to be gentle and pure and yet are contaminated with carcinogens, which are not only unnecessary but can cause cancer.

Because many of these high profile products are used in hospitals parents believe they offer the safest option. Why wouldn’t they be if they are used in the hospitals? Unfortunately, we are unknowingly and unintentionally promoting bad products.

Are you washing your baby with carcinogens?

An independent US laboratory tested a range of top-selling brands and found many of them contained formaldehyde, which is used to embalm corpses. Out of the 28 baby shampoos tested, according 23 contained formaldehyde a probable cancer-causing agent. Formaldehyde is not listed as an ingredient in the baby bubbles, but is released as preservatives in the products break down over time. Studies have linked the substance to cancers of the brain, nasal sinuses and possibly leukaemia.

The results also showed that some products had traces of 1,4-dioxane, a foaming agent that is also believed to be a cancer risk for humans.

It is banned in Europe, and formaldehyde is restricted. However, the chemicals are apparently unregulated in the US.

Both substances were apparently found in Johnson’s Baby Shampoo and L’Oreal Kids Extra Gentle 2-in-1 shampoo

Stacy Malkan from the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics, who commissioned the tests, said: “If chemicals are causing cancer in animals, we really shouldn’t be putting them on babies’ heads.”

However the Personal Care Products Council accused the group of preying on parents’ fears and described the results as “blatantly false”.

Protect your baby from these toxic products:

1. Research… read labels and avoids those products that contain harmful ingredients.

2. Use baby products sparingly, use only the minimal amount required.

3. Keep up to date on news surrounding chemicals in baby products.

4. Love disposable baby wipes but want to avoid the chemicals? Make your own wipes. Want to learn how? Read our article DIY – Home Made Baby Wipes http://prem2pram.wordpress.com/2009/12/27/diy-homemade-baby-wipes/

5. Expecting a baby… Ask your hospital which baby products they use on babies in their care. If it’s not a safe choice, bring your own and make your baby’s first bath a healthy, toxin-free bath.
